ANCILLARY TASK: Final Choices for Our Digipak

From the screenshot below you can see we have decided to use the image of Kate as a puppet with the cross above and her looking up. We have decided to use this image as it is really effective in the way it reinforces the puppet idea, the way in which we framed and composed the image results in the puppet cross instantly catching the eye and creating focus while making Kate appear inferior due to the size of the cross in comparison.

We decided to place the font going across the puppet cross because we felt this drew the eye in to the image and appears to have a sense of dominance compared to the remainder of the image . The font we used is Charlemagne STD and we used the colour Red...by doing this we believe we are conforming to the conventions of the rock-pop/pop-punk genre as digipaks from this genre usually have bold and/or simple text featured on them. This is usually in simple, dark colours which usually relate to the theme/song of the song and/or the artist`s identity. We decided to use a emboss/bevel effect on the title to make it appear like it has a slight shadow behind it, to add a bleak, gloomy "Emo" effect to it, amplifying the genre more so.
For the copyright/production information and the website etc we decided to use a different font (FONT) because we applied the Charlemagne STD font used for the title and tracking list and when applying the same font to the copyright information etc we felt it was too dominant and took the attention away from the track listing.

The screenshots above show how we have experimented with ideas. Originally we came up with the idea of making the image black and white and then making aspects that were originally Red like the jeans and lips stand out by using the history brush tool. However, when trying this idea out we decided the image looked better in it`s originally state of colour as we felt the black and white idea created too much attention on the red aspects and took attention away from other aspects such as the puppet cross.

The back cover will feature a silhouette of Tom (our boyfriend figure). We believe this will add a sense of mystery to Tom's character and suggest that he is the villain, the bad character. The silhouette will feature Tom holding the puppet strings which relates back to the video and the fact the image is silhouetted could reinforce the bleak, powerful connotations we are trying to establish with this idea.

To ensure we captured an effective silhouette we used the theatre lighitng in the drama studio. By placing Tom in front of the light against a white wall a dramatic photo was ensured. However, while taking photos the puppet strings did not appear as well as we would have liked them to or Tom's silhouette was too dark. This can be seen below.

Therefore, we came up with the idea of taking a photo of Tom holding a broken rose, which can be seen below. We are going to use this image for the back of our digipak as we believe it is a well composed image and relates to the inside of our digipak of the rose, which we think creates continuity throughout the digipak.

The inside of our digipak will feature a rose in the left corner. Above the rose the lyrics of the song will feature in white, we believe this will reinforce the purpose of the digipak (to promote the song/artist) and remind the purchaser of this. The right hand side will feature a trail of rose petals to draw the eye to where the CD/DVD is placed. To give us a wide range of choice we took a variety of photos, some of these can be seen below.

Similar to our original idea for the front cover (black and white and bringing out the colour Red), we also thought about this idea for the inside of our digipak, placing the rose and petals in red and the remainder in black and white. Although, we decided to go round the images in black, creating a black background (screenshots showing this in progress can be seen below) which really made the colour red stand out. Therefore, we decided not to go ahead with the black and white idea as we felt the idea we were proceeding with dramatically caught the eye and made the rose and petals stand out effectively.
