I appreciate that the photograph may not clearly show our ideas. Therefore, I have placed the lyrics below with our ideas below them with the reasoning behind these ideas.
So much for my happy ending
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh...
Let's talk this over
It's not like we're dead
Was it something I did?
Was it something You said?
Don't leave me hanging
In a city so dead
Held up so high
On such a breakable thread
You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought we could be
[Chorus:]
You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
And all of the memories, so close to me, just fade away
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh...
You've got your dumb friendsI know what they say
They tell you I'm difficult
But so are they
But they don't know me
Do they even know you?
All the things you hide from me
All the shit that you do [CD version]
All the stuff that you do [radio edited version]
You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought we could be
[Chorus]
It's nice to know that you were there
Thanks for acting like you cared
And making me feel like I was the only one
It's nice to know we had it all
Thanks for watching as I fall
And letting me know we were done
[Chorus x2]
[x2]
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh...
So much for my happy ending
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh...
Ideas & Reasons for these Ideas
At the beginning of the song - "So much for my happy ending Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh..." we have come up with the idea of filming a still shot of a framed photo of the couple shown throughout the video with a vase of roses next to it. However, we have decided we are going to edit the shot to black and white but then keep the roses red. We came up with this idea as we believe it will emphasise the colour commonly associated with romance - red. Also, we feel by doing this in black and white it will highlight the feeling of loss and sadness and ensure that the audience establish early on in the video that something is not right in regards to the couples relationship. We have also thought about filming the photo frame at the end of video but broken on the floor to symbolise that the couples relationship is broken.
When I was looking at some of Avril`s songs on YouTube I came across the video below. As you can see a similar editing technique is used with regards to the black & white and the emphasis on red. However, i would like to point out that we came up with this idea originally and then discovered the same technique is used in one of Avril`s videos.
We then thought about relating the next two lines - "Let's talk this over, It's not like we're dead" and actually you could also say the majority of the song to a feeling of death and loss. Therefore, we have thought about shooting a few scenes in Gemma's local grave yard. We feel this location will present to the audience the idea of losing a relationship, it fading and dying. For the particular line "Let's talk this over" we are thinking about filming Kate - our Avril figure grabbing our boyfriend figure - Tom in a motion of desperation but as she grabs him and tries to get him to turn around. We will edit the shot in to slow motion to add dramatic effect.
Then for the lines saying - "Was it something i did?, Was it something you said?" we are going to introduce an extreme close up of the singer's lips wearing bright red lipstick. We feel the bright red lipstick will gain the audience's focus and the believe this shot will ensure that the audience's focus is maintained as we progress in to the first performance element of the video. Using the shot of the lips also incorporates the idea of the visuals corresponding with the lyric as "something you said" is speaking and we speak out of our mouth/lips.
For the line - "Don't leave me hanging in a city so dead" we are thinking about filming Kate in the middle of our local city,Lincoln with people walking past her, in the rush of the city while she stands still. To ensure that the people appear to be moving in a fast motion around Kate we will speed the footage up. This idea is to reinforce to the audience the break down in a relationship, the emotional feelings that come with a break up - like your whole world is about to fall apart while everyone else around you goes about their daily routine.
Continuing the idea of the visuals matching the lyrics we have come up with the idea of shooting our artist/girlfriend figure (Kate) as a human puppet being controlled by the boyfriend figure (Tom). We originally came up with this idea when we was thinking about the lyric – “Held up so high on such a breakable thread”.
Our original idea was to just shoot our artist dressed as a puppet, cutting the strings and letting her fall just for that one line. However, as we discussed this idea more we developed it and denotations and connotations behind it. We have now decided that we will introduce this puppet idea on the line stated…“Held up so high on such a breakable thread” but then develop it as the song continues.
For example, on the line “Held up so high on such a breakable thread” we have decided not to cut the strings and let her fall, not just yet. As this is at the beginning of the song we are going to film the boyfriend figure controlling the girlfriend/artist figure. As we believe filming the cut of the puppet strings towards the end of the song on the line “Thanks for watching as I fall” will be more effective due to what the puppet presents.
So what does the puppet present you may ask? At the beginning of the song the puppet and the strings which she is controlled by represent control of her relationship with her partner; he is her support, the person who lifts her up when she is down, the person who keeps her standing, in a metaphorical sense and a literal sense. Although, as the song progresses and the audience begin to establish a break down in the couple’s relationship they begin to see the break down of the puppet, control is being lost between her and her partner until she eventually looses control of herself and her relationship which is when we will cut the strings of the puppet which we believe will give a good dramatic effect to the piece.
The lyrics relate to the feelings we are trying to convey: loss, a fall from grace/happiness, the end of a relationship and also coming towards the end of the song – “Thanks for watching as I fall and letting me know we were done”. To ensure that the message/feelings we are trying to convey remain throughout the song we will use cut away through out the video of the strings, the puppet and her series of emotions.

The image below demonstrates our puppet idea.
This video below also demonstrates our idea. We presented this idea to our teacher and then after he showed us this video - Nsync "ByeByeBye"...which highlights the idea of being controlled by a puppet and the controller appearing bigger than the person being controlled.
This video also sprung to mind as a more modern concept of our idea when we presented it to our teacher as the artist Jessie J is controlled like a puppet in some scenes of her video - the costume which is used creates focus and adds a theatrical element to the piece.
