OUR SONG CHOICE

OUR SONG CHOICE

Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

Keeping to the idea of modern artists we then discussed artists which are known for being upbeat and exploitative in their lyrics. We then came up with the band "The Arctic Monkeys" and looked in to their songs. We have decided on the song "When the Sun Goes Down" as we believe it will give us the chance to explore the song lyrically and because of this hopefully we will be able to come up with many ideas for filming opportunities. Also another reason for our decision is the song starts slow and then suddenly ups tempo which we think will immediately engage the audience.

Lyrics to When The Sun Goes Down : ( ) = Possible Ideas we have had.

Who's that girl there? (Wide shot of our prostitute figure wearing dirty, ripped clothes with smudged make-up, then zoom in to her face to see a close-up of the make-up)

I wonder what went wrong

So that she had to roam the streets

She dunt do major credit cards

I doubt she does receipts

It's all not quite legitimate

And what a scummy man

Just give him half a chance

I bet he'll rob you if he can

Can see it in his eyes,

Yeah, that he's got a driving ban

Amongst some other offences

And I've seen him with girls of the night

And he told Roxanne to put on her red light (Shot of Red traffic light)
They're all infected but he'll be alright (Shot of Syringe, Pills etc.)

Cause he's a scumbag, don't you know

I said he's a scumbag, don't you know!

Although you're trying not to listen

Overt your eyes and staring at the ground

She makes a subtle proposition

"I'm sorry love I'll have to turn you down"

He must be up to something

What are the chances sure it's more than likely

I've got a feeling in my stomach

I start to wonder what his story might be

They said it changes when the sun goes down

Around here

Look here comes a Ford Mondeo (Ford Mondeo drives past our prostitute figure, using a pan we pan across her as the car stops and then she will lean in to the car in a provocative manner)

Isn't he Mister Inconspicuous?

And he don't even have to say 'owt

She's in the stance ready to get picked up (Stood on a street corner to relate to the lyrics)

Bet she's delighted when she sees him

Pulling in and giving her the eye

Because she must be fucking freezing

Scantily clad beneath the clear night sky

it doesn't stop in the winter, no

Around here

They said it changes when the sun goes down

Over the river going out of town

What a scummy man

Just give him half a chance

I bet he'll rob you if he can

Can see it in his eyes that he's got a nasty plan

I hope you're not involved at all

As you can see from the lyrics above the song explores the theme of prostitution. Therefore, we have discussed the denotations (the specific, literal image/idea/concept or object that a sign refers to) and connotations (the assumptions/meanings that a sign carries) of this theme such as:

  • Street Corners, Alley ways
  • Red Lights
  • Illegal
  • Desperation
  • Confusion
  • Desire
  • Drug users
  • Big cities
  • Exchange of Money
  • Infection
  • Dirty
  • Bleak
  • Filth or Grime
  • Depression
  • Melancholy
  • Hopelessness
  • Depravity
  • Isolation

In terms of locations for this music video we have decided we would like locations which are very warehouse like and are in isolated areas and for this reason we have discussed maybe filming in the industrial estate of Market Rasen as we believe it  would be suitable for the theme of the song as many prostitutes tend to be seen in strange locations such as warehouses and industrial estates, where they are found meeting their customers out of sight of preying eyes.

This image below from Google Maps gives you an insight into the type of location the industrial estate is and just how "rough looking" it is.
